THE HISTORY OF OUR YMCA
In the early 1940's the Wiscassett Mills Association began reviewing opportunities to open a recreational facility for the people of Stanly County. After much research, the association decided to build and open a YMCA because of the Christian values of the organization.
On July 16, 1950, the Wiscassett Memorial YMCA officially opened. Below are a few milestones the organization has reached throughout its 60 + years of operation:

In 1963, the Y opened the first indoor swimming pool in the region.

In 1984, the Y was gifted to the community and the Stanly County Family YMCA was formed.

In 1988 the first Y Capital Campaign was conducted under the leadership of C.B. Crook, Jr. and over $5,000,000 was raised.

In 1990, the Y conducted its first renovation with the demolition of the basement.

In 1991, the Stanly County Family YMCA gave away approximately $24,000 in financial assistance.

In 1994, the Y Pavilion was renovated and expanded to meet the growing needs of the Y and the community.

In 1997, the warm water pool capital campaign began under the leadership of C.B. Crook, Jr.

In 1997, a new Fitness Training Center was established with new fitness, cardiovascular, and training equipment served cardiac rehab patients, adults, youth, and families.

In 1998, the Stanly Regional Medical Center Cardiac Rehab Program relocated to the Y.

In 1999, the warm water pool capital campaign came to an end with a total of $2,250,000 raised to build a warm water pool.

In 1999, the Y held its Grand Opening of the Kean-Hartquist Therapy Center.

In 2005, the third capital campaign was held to renovate the Y facility. The campaign was led, once again, by C.B. Crook, Jr. and raised over $750,000.

In 2007, the Y collaborated with the Albemarle Rotary Club and Push America to install an All Children's Playground in the Cannon Memorial YMCA Park.

In the fall of 2008, the Albemarle Rotary Club collaborated with the Y to build a handicapped accessible restroom in the YMCA Park. In February 2009, the facility was opened to the public.

Summer of 2011, Stanly Regional Medical Center established a pulmonary rehab program at the Y.

In the spring of 2012, the Stanly County Family YMCA was awarded a grant from the LIVESTRONG Foundation to establish a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. SCFY became one of 108 Ys to offer this program to local cancer survivors.

In May 2012, the Y received a $25,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to support the 2nd Grade Learn to Swim program. Future plans are to expand the program to 100% of the elementary schools in Stanly County.
